Researchers at the University of California, Davis have found that California peaches, plums and nectarines are good sources of two groups of phytonutrients, the carotenoids and the polyphenols, both powerful antioxidants that may hold the secret to long life and vitality. Research shows that antioxidants can protect skin from damaging UV rays, and antioxidants are more effective when more than one is present at the same time, so eat up!

Following are four tips for consumers to get started beautifying themselves from the inside out.

Put down the chips and grab a plum. Flavonoids, found in plums and peaches, have been shown to protect against cancer and heart disease. Some of the same flavonoids found in green tea are found in plums and peaches.

Planning a backyard bbq? Add grilled fruit to the menu. Grilled peaches, plums and nectarines are delicious on their own or served with vanilla ice cream.

It's easy to ripen firm peaches, plums or nectarines. Just place the fruit in a paper bag, fold the top over loosely, and keep it at room temperature for 1-3 days. Check the fruit daily.

Try making a facial mask with peaches, plums or nectarines. The gentle exfoliation of the fruit peels speeds up cell renewal, leading to healthier skin tone.

The California Tree Fruit Agreement, headquartered in Reedley, CA, administers marketing order programs on behalf of California's 2,000 fresh peach, plum and nectarine growers. Originally established in 1933, CTFA includes the Peach Commodity Committee and the Nectarine Administrative Committee, both federal programs, and the California Plum Marketing Board, a state program.
